Google Spreadsheets - It’s Free And It’s Online

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Google SpreadsheetsThe [tag]Google[/tag] train has added another significant application to its collection. Enter [tag]Google Spreadsheets[/tag], the new kid on the Google block (new to me anyways).

Forget saving up for Microsoft Excel, the Google Spreadsheets is free - and it is online - no downloads required!

The Google Spreadsheets saves your documents the instant you create one - no more losing your work if your computer crashes or the likes. Since the spreadsheet is online, you are even free of a hard disk failure threat! This looks to be kinda like the GMail concept where you do not have to delete any mail you have ever sent or received.

Google Spreadsheets OnlineThen there is this live online changes feature where changes to a [tag]spreadsheet[/tag] is updated live online. This only makes sense if you could share the spreadsheet - but wait - you can! Google Spreadsheets allow online sharing. You can also invite people to view your sheets on a read only basis.

There are some downsides at the moment though. You cannot print. You cannot do charts. You do not have any right mouse button functionalities. Oh, and you need to try your luck to be able to test Google Spreadsheets since it is currently on a first-come-first served testing basis right now. You can try your luck at Google Spreadsheets.

I think that this will be a cool new application by Google that could give Microsoft a run for their money if done well. Check out a comprehensive review by CNet since the reviewer already has access to Google Spreadsheets.

I have signed up to give it a shot because I just gotta have one!
