Cellphone Low on Power? Charge with Water!

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

Cellphone Fuel CellI picked this neat gadget up off HipTech Blog.

Anyone who has ever owned a [tag]cellphone[/tag] has been in this situation more than once: you are waiting to receive (or make) some important calls but your state-of-the -art cellphone is really low on power. With no [tag]charger[/tag] in sight, you pray that your batteries hold up as advertised. You do remember that the 1 week standby time is if you never made a phone call, right?

An in-car charger makes life a little bit easier in terms of topping up the juice but there is one drawback - you have to be in a car, and you have to remember to plug your phone in…

Trust the Japanese to come up with a gizmo that lets you charge your phone with water.

The gizmo is basically a mini [tag]fuel cell[/tag] unit - you know, the kind that automakers are exploring as a future energy source other than fossil fuel. Basically, fuel cells work by converting hydrogen gas to electricity.

What’s water gotta do with it? Water is to 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen, remember?

This gizmo extracts the hydrogen out of water to run the fuel cell that supplies your cellphone with electricity. Details are in the diagram below if you can read chemical reactions.

How it works

So now, all you need is to remember to bring the fuel cell charger to keep your cellphone powered up always!

If u have done GCSE science you should understand what is going on in the diagram - electrolysis in reverse and catalysis (increases efficiency of a chemical reaction - here, two O-H bonds are being broken in water). You will also have done enough thermodynamics to understand that energy can not be released, overall, in these steps. Someone is obviosly playing hide and seek with the catch.

havn’t found it yet but was intregued enough to have a lil look.

I’m bored - think i’ll listen to a bit of black sabbath or led zep [plugging some decent music while i'm at it]

Whoever wrote this article obviously has no idea about what they’re talking about - c’mon, for goodness sake - its year 9 science [thats like when ure about 15 years old]

thought i’d plug guns ‘n’ roses too, for shits and giggles.
