Water Margin Online - It’s Free!!!

Monday, September 18th, 2006

Water Margin OnlineNow this you don’t see everyday - an MMORPG that is really free to play! If you didn’t know, MMORPG stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.

For something that is free, this is one heckuva good game. Yes, I will admit that there is an Item Mall on the official website which allows you to buy items with real cash to give your avatar a boost - but still, you can opt not to and still be competitive.

Water Margin Online is based on Chinese mythology. It revolves around the legend of 108 water margin heroes of China. You can’t play these heroes but you can purchase hero cards online to summon them.

Speaking of purchases, I thought I said that this game was free to play? Well, it is. Almost all of the items that are purchase only products can be bought within the game. You see, other players tend to sell them in the in-game currency - silver ounces. You have to collect loads of silver ounces though but it is not impossible.

The gameplay itself is quite straightforward and fun. The interface looks kinda like Diablo except that it is not all dark and danky. It is no state-of-the-art graphics but the avatars, monsters and scenery are well drawn and easy on the eyes (well, my eyes anyway).

You begin by creating an avatar (how else?). There are 6 jobs to choose from in the beginning: Major, Peasant, Thief, Literatus, Taoist and Monk. The Major, Peasant and Monk jobs are for the warrior buffs. Literatus is the wizard and Taoist is the priest/healer.

You will start off in a newbie town where you look for your specific job trainers to get you up and running. Then, it is off to the real world for some real adventure!

Water Margin Online runs on a main quest which you can complete at your own leisure. You will start with a Chapter 1 quest where you will end up killing this really nasty white tiger to complete it. Along the way, there are many many general quests to beef up your avatar.

Partying is available and is quite straight forward. You right click on someone and ask him to join up. Then you guys split the experience points for kills. If you get a good mix of guys, then leveling up is quick and painless!

The game is being run by a Malaysian company called MyCNX Sdn. Bhd. so the server is based in and around Malaysia, I think.

You do have to download a 1GB plus client though but that’s no problems with broadband. It’s a good game. I like it.

Check out the Official Website for more.
