World’s Thinnest LCD Display by LG.Philips
Sunday, October 1st, 2006
LG.Philips announced recently that they have developed the world’s thinnest TFT-LCD display measuring only 1.3mm in thickness - 30% slimmer than the current LCDs in today’s mobile phones (generally having 1.9mm and 2.9mm thick LCDs).
This new breakthrough will allow mobile phones that will be even slimmer than the presently available 6.9mm thick mobile phones. Sliding phones can now break the 10mm thickness barrier.
This innovation from LG.Philips also refutes the myth that LCDs are thicker than OLEDs (OLEDS are typically between 15mm and 1.8mm thick).
In addition to its ultra-thin LED backlight technology that can raise the brightness of the panel to 400 nits (cd/㎡), LG.Philips LCD used new ultra-thin light guide plate and glass substrate technologies to further reduce the panel’s thickness. Current brightness is between 200 and 300 nits (cd/㎡). This super-slim LCD panel also uses the company’s patent pending structural modification technology to provide greater durability without the need for a stainless steel plate to protect the LCD’s components.
LG.Philips LCD plans to unveil its 1.3mm LCD panel for super-slim phones at the opening of SID Mobile Displays 2006, in San Diego, California on October 3rd, 2006.
