Buying Songs Online Is Like MacOS vs. Windows

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

ZuneAt least that is what it is shaping up to be. iPod users who purchase songs from iTunes will have no problems playing the songs. Try to play a song on your iPod that you bought from Napster and you will be in for a headache. I am sure the songs sound the same - if you get it to play.

iPods are built on a closed system that works effortlessly on Apple based network - iTune to iPod, basically. But songs sold on Napster, Rhapsody, Yahoo Music and most other online stores are geared towards Microsoft endorsed technology digital devices. Won’t play on an iPod, but will work fine on SanDisk, Creative Labs or the likes.

Trust Microsoft to complicate things further.

The Zune by Microsoft will be another closed based system. Closed even to Microsoft endorsed players mentioned above. Only songs purchased from Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace will play on Zunes.

I imagine that certain albums will be contracted to specific sellers (e.g. Apple or Microsoft) leaving us consumers with the expensive choice of owning multiple players.

Not really helping in stamping out piracy I think…
